2021.09.28 15:29 do_you_tho Germany, Framework or Thinkpad P14s AMD 4k?
I am torn. I would really love to get a Framework laptop, but I need a new machine within the next few weeks and I live in Germany. I could probably get by another two month on my X220.
Should I skip this Framework model and go with a Thinkpad?

I am into informatics/computer science. RAM and a good CPU are important for me, as I need virtual machines and compile code. I don't play games or anything. I have the cash for this, but it must count.
I prefer the Framework for the aspect ratio, the philosophy, and repairability. Not a fan of grey aluminum and no nipple, no ethernet tho. And yeah the AMD CPU is better in the Thinkpad, too.
Importing the Framework myself is not an option.
What should I do??? How much will the XXX amount to when the Framework is released for Germany?

2021.09.28 15:29 gwarster I had the most bizarre experience after my phone was stolen out of my car on Saturday night.
So Saturday night, like a moron, I left my passenger window open in my car and my old iPhone in the console. Of course I remembered to lock the car, but not close the window. Predictably, I come out to see my car ransacked the next morning with the contents of my glovebox and console everywhere. I completely space on the fact that my old phone was in there and go about my day until the afternoon when I think about grabbing both phones to play some Pokemon Go. Then I remember… shit. After checking Find My iPhone, I see the phone is located at 2501 Cedar Ave – the Little Earth Community Center.
Not really knowing what I am going to do when I arrive, I hop in the car and drive up there. My phone is still on, so I know it is there and I’m sure I can track it to a pretty small area. I arrive and realize that it isn’t actually at the community center, its at the adjacent apartment complex. Obviously that complicates things, but at the same time I get another ping on its location and it says I’m within 35 feet of it. So I take a seat on a bench outside in the courtyard, mark my phone as lost, and add a message that says “I am sitting outside XXXX Cedar Ave in the courtyard. I know my phone is here and I will pay a reward for its return. I don’t want anyone getting in trouble.”
After about 10 minutes sitting out front, a girl in her early 20s comes out of a ground level apartment right in front of me and sits down to have a smoke. An older woman in her 50s comes out shortly thereafter and lights up as well. Within a minute or so, she starts giving me shit.
“What are you looking at? Why are you in front of my place? You’re going to piss of the wrong person being here!” and so on…
I just respond by saying “Sorry I’m don’t mean to make you feel anyway. I’m looking for my lost phone and I know its within 30 feet of me. I’m hoping someone saw the message on it and will return it for a reward.”
Over the next 5-10 minutes she goes from “I didn’t steal your phone!” to “Well my cousin bought some phones and might have it let me check.” She goes inside, comes back out and says “No we don’t have it, so you’d better leave.”
I respond with “Well I know my phone is here somewhere and I’m not leaving without it. So right now I’m just waiting for the police to arrive.” In truth, I had called the non-emergency number on the way on the off-chance they could do something. I neither expected them to arrive or even help. As soon as she had heard I called the police though, the attitude changed pretty quick.
“Oh you don’t need any police around here. They won’t do anything anyway!” She pops back inside and within a minute, her cousin comes out the front, beelines it past me, and into another apartment. Parked outside of this other apartment are multiple very nice, new unlocked Cannondales. A minute or two after that, another guy leaves that apartment with a backpack on a bike and the cousin does the same, but in an opposite direction.
I’m still sitting there waiting. Hoping that the music on the second floor will get turned off so I can ping my phone to make a sound. That doesn’t happen, but the woman comes back out and says something to the effect of “Hey! So my cousin said it might be in here since he bought some phones yesterday afternoon to repair. You can come help me look.” Obviously this was bullshit because my phone was stolen between 10PM and 7AM, but whatever. If I can get it back, I don’t care about the lies.
I follow her inside and the first room inside the apartment is full of backpacks and duffel bags. She says its inside one of these bags and I can just start rummaging through them. I’m 95% sure most of this stuff was stolen. One bag had four laptops and two iPads. Multiple bags were just full of shampoo or detergent. Same deal with clothes that still had the anti-theft tags on. After my third bag, she gives me a warning to watch where I put my hand since there may be used syringes – sure enough on my next bag, I find one.
We spend the next 15 minutes cleaning out her front room and moving and organizing these bags onto the porch. Sure enough at this point, the police call and inform me that they’re out front in the parking lot. I’m not really sure what they could be doing differently at this point. My “hunch” that this stuff is stolen doesn’t really give them any ability to act and I feel like I’ve at least gotten an admission from her that she has my phone and is willing to give it back. So I tell the cops they can leave – no reason to escalate things further.
After they leave and I come back to the apartment, she magically finds my phone and hands it over. She tells me her cousin texted her back as soon as she saw me tell the cops to leave. According to her, he bought it Saturday afternoon from someone (again, impossible). I told her thanks and asked her to please tell her cousin to not steal from me again.
This was such a bizarre Sunday afternoon and have no idea where else to share it aside from Reddit.

2021.09.28 15:29 ZukoBestGirl I have some "General Game Tips"
I felt the need to post this after seeing, very clearly, that many discussions are going the wrong way. Be it here, on steam, or other places.
Imho, the game has some very nice game design decisions, that can be handled in some interesting ways. But they aren't exactly pointed out, and a lot of people don't seem to be going in the right direction. So this isn't a build order, general guide. Just some tips on how the game works, and ways to work with that, not against it.
That being said, I only cared about playing the first race, the second one doesn't appeal to me. Some things might not apply to them.
General ideas The game was designed in a certain way. Use that design!
- Food does not spoil
- Storage is easy to build, huge. It takes no effort to store huge quantities. USE THAT!
- The way storage is implemented in the game is full on amateur hour. Horrendously bad. So you need to fix it yourself.
- Water storage is a noob trap. The point of the game is to dam water, not store it in barrels.
- Water evaporation sucks. Pumping out water drains small lakes surprisingly fast. Plan for it.
The above points is the whole reason I'm doing this post. So many people just don't get that. I will go through them, 1 by 1, then go into a bit more details about other stuff. #1 & 2
Food does not spoil. Stockpile the shit out of it! It's that simple. Just stockpile loads and loads of food. Don't go crazy. But be ready for no harvest for a full drought if necessary. Storage is cheap. Just logs. Sure, logs are your most precious resource for a very long time. It is THE limiting factor, it is THE reason to expand. But a few logs for some food is an easy price to pay. Stack them veritcally, pause buildings and only make them when you have the resources. Go crazy, but not too crazy.
Log storage is a bit annoying, so maybe early on don't waste space with it. Has to be on ground. 3x3 but only 180 cap. It's garbage so don't over do it when space is at a premium. But feel free to whack 10 of those bad boys down when space is no longer an issue. It's free after all. #3
The UI and tools you have at your disposal absolutely suck. Garbage. Hot garbage. So you have to fix it yourself. Each and every storage building should contain only 1 single solitary resource type. This way you can sorta keep track of your capacity (by manually counting and remembering. Cuz there's no ingame tool for it). This means that super over-producing wheat (that isn't edible) won't fill your storage that now contains no carrots and no baked potatoes and you starve over a stupidity like that. #4
The small water tanks are absolute flaming garbage. Trash fire. You need it in the early days. But if you are relying on it, you've already failed.
- Build no storage => no visual indicator of trouble => Death. The 15 storage of the pump is just not enough.
- Build too much of it => it hardly stores any water at all => you barely survive, have a small population, spend too much precious logs on a wasted building that does nothing except prolongue the inevitable doom.
- Build way too much of it => you can sustain a large population, but you can't build anything else, long drought comes and you die.
- Building large water barrels costs gears that you could be using on windmils. There isn't much of a point in having drinking water if you can't get planks / gears / paper / wheat. You will fall further and further behind. It's a waste.
Noob trap. Don't. Have 2-3 of them in the early game as an "upsie" bumper, in case you misscalculate or don't pay attention. It should not be your main source of water. Much later yes, get 10 of them, sure. Longer droughts are a pain.
The only correct way to play the game is to dam the river. Pump out water even during droughts. Make a second layer of taller dams behind as a reservoir. Dump water from it into your starting area reservoir. Once you have enough resources and stockpiles, slowly demolish your river-line and start raising it's walls.
Create artificial lakes or accumulation lakes where you pour water from your main dam to have accessible water. This is super important for hippie beavers with their microscopic water pump tube. The chadzillas with their 6 tile super tube don't need to worry so much. #5
Unless a map was designed in a specific way, you will start near a water source that is by no means sufficient. You will place 1 level of levee or what have you to contain some water to pump out even during droughts, and have greenery for crops. But any good map will be designed in such a way that only the starting area is super easy to dam, and that this super easy dam just won't last much. Evaporation is a bitch, and pumping out water means you will eventually drain your small puddle.
Make a larger dam behind your starting area. Use it as a baterry, an acumulator. It will be higher, 2-3 tiles depth. Means more water, less evaporation. Only tiles of water exposed to the air (top most) evaporate. Every tile beneath, does not. Build tall, not wide.
From this battery, let water fall into your starting area to keep it full.
Expand on the map with exactly 2 goals in mind. Idealy, do both at the same time.
#1 Need more wood. Always more wood. Find green spot, plant trees, plant some food. Make a main food hub. Transport only potatoes (not baked) and flower. Never anything else. Where you expand, probably only grow carrots. Easy to farm, hardy in case of drought, quick to harvest. Difficult and unrewarding to trasport.
#2 Plug holes in the natural part of your dam. The hardest of hard maps will force you to build every inch of your dam. But easier maps (esp not player made maps), will have natural terain that you can use to help you build your dam. It will also have gaps that will flood your beavers, putting a hard cap on how tall your dam can be. Expand to have builders there to plug the hole. Prioritize areas with greenery so you can also make a small vilage there. Will help immeasurably in the early days. The whole driving force of the game is the worsening droughts. If all droughts were like the first 2-3 cycles. You could get a permanently suistainable village of 60 beavers within 3-5 cycles and win the game.
Because this is not the case, you need to expand. Expand why? You need wood. Why do you need wood? Because you will build thousands, maybe tens of thousands of dam tiles. "Levee" whatever that word may mean, my english is good, but not perfect.
You expand to grow trees, you take the trees and make logs, gears and paper, to make higher and higher dams and windmills to compensate for no water movement. This is your driving force.
What do we have access to when starting a map? Well, you start off as a small contingent of beavers on an almost empty map. All you have is:
Let's start by breaking that down:
- Some debris blocking ponds
- A few natural slopes
- The map layout
- Some living trees
- Some dead trees
- Some berries
- Some ruins
Debris Obvious. Smash for extra green stuff.
Natural Slopes Extremley important. They always have more resources for you in case of an emergency. Generally speaking you can make due in the starting area withtout exploiting them. But from a map design point of view, they are there for the observers and planners to give them more options, more time.
Map Layout Scan map. Plan dams. Your main goal is to make the tales dam you possibly can. Wide == evaporation == death. Tall == I_WIN_EASY.
Find holes that will flood if you raise the level too high. Raise before that point, expand to fill the gap, raise some more, expand some more, raise even further!
Trees Dead trees are dead. They won't come back to life, and won't reproduce. Cut them down when you need to, but they are not your priority.
Living trees are, not surprisingly, alive. When a papa tree and a momma tree love eachother, they make baby trees. Or something like that. Point is, any living tree, once matured, has a chance every day to make a baby tree in any surrounding tile. If you clear-cut the forest, a few baby trees will survive.
By the time you they grown, you probably sent your beavers elsewhere, and by the time you come back, they might have made some babies of their own. This is why you keep coming to a patch you'd want to clear out and there's always one or two left.
USE THIS! Select a tree, cut every tree around it, but never cut that tree. It will germinate or babynate if you prefer. Optimal pattern below:
x = Cut T = Baby momma
x x x x x x x T x x T x x x x x x x x x x x x x x T x x T x x x x x x x
Remove one edge of cutting if you want the tree line to expand. Pull out stumps. IDK if it works or not, but hey, there's not much to do in the early days
Note: This is only useful if you can't rush that 60 science for the wood cutter. Unless your map is positively murderous regarding water chryseis, there is no better first tech to get. But hey, the above is an option.
Note 2: Prioritiez cutting dense living trees with the above pattern first, then dead trees. This is because you need to clear terain for baby trees.
Berries I think the second type of bievers need berries to make babies. Kinky, I like it. But IDK, don't play them. For not-them, berries are trash. Don't stockpile them. Prioritize farming ASAP.
FOOD IN GENERAL How food works is this:
This is incredibly important on multiple levels!
- If no food, die
- If berries, but nothing else, eat berries.
- If some food, other than berries, eat that.
- If multiple not berries, eat a bit of all existing food.
#1 Berries are trash. Only there for your first drought. Maybe second and third when you start learning the game. But after you get the hang of thigns, you won't even use them for your first drought.
After starting to get carrots, berries will stay in your storehouses forever. If you're playing the game right and not starving your poor beevers. If all you have is carrots, you have a problem. Transporting them is a nightmare. If you want to expand early, you have to build carrots where you move. CRUCIAL!
Getting potatoes reduces the consumption of carrots, it's not like having 2-3 types of food makes beavers eat 2-3 times as much. So if you see that your carrot are going down and down slowly due to increasing population, where before it was stable, get some potatoes. They require almost no tech to make edible, just more work and some logs.
Getting wheat makes food easy-mode. Now you have the best yealding food that is also the easisest to transport!
Transporting food As discussed, transporting carrots is bad bad bad. Instead of carrying 1 carot, you can carry 1 potato. Then at destination cook one potato into 3 edible potato. Flower is 1 to 5, I believe. So only ever carry flower and potato, grow carrots locally
Food and water relationship
But back to water:
- Berries and carots have the same yeald, but berries take longer 3 times longer to grow.
- Potatoes have the same yeald, but takes 50% longer to grow AND wood, AND an extra worker or 2. They're only better for transportation and nutrition. No need to rush.
- Flower takes way more work, but is way better to transport and just as easy to cook. You don't transport wheat, you transport flower. You don't even necessarily need to store the bread since the bakery has an inventory of almost 200 bread. It's GREAT!
IMPLICATIONS OF THE ABOVE This means that you need, absolutely need, to plant wheat next to the river, net to your dams. Do not rely on irigation, or manual gates you might forget to use.
- Berries last a long ass time. Gives you time after a drought has started to pick them up, they will even continue growing after the drought in the first couple of years.
- Carrots survive for a bit after a drought begins. Enough time to call all hands on deck and harvest them. But won't survive an entire drought.
- Potatoes are even worse, but not by much.
- Wheat does not survive without water. It just does not. If your system fails even for a bit, you can lose an entire harvest.
Potatoes and especially carrots, you can exploit! And I don't mean game breaking exploits. There's at least one of those with a single tile water dump. I don't do game exploits. I do things that were intended to be done.
So lets say you expand into an area you simply cannot damm off yet. But you need food, at least carrots. But they will die during the long droughts. Weeel what you can do is put an irigation building on it. And only ask for water once every two days. And only let one beaver deliver water. Let me explain. Irigation towers suck, and that is by design. Only when you have a huge thriving colony could you ever permanently irigate land. When you're trying to survinve, you can't do that. So what you do is not harvest food during the dry season. You just keep the harvest alive. No more, no less!
In other words, see how long till your food dies. For carrots it's two days. Turn the tower on, reduce game speed. Watch the first beaver with water on it's back come in, right after he enters the building, turn it off. All other bievers go back, the tower has a tiny quantity of water in it. Restarts the plant as being alive. Extens its life by another 2 cycles.
EVEN ON HARD DIFFICULTY DURING THE ENDGAME DROUGHTS OF 30 DAYS! This is only like 12 water every 2 days per tower => 15*12 = 180 ~= half of a big barel per tower per INSANE DROUGHT. It's child's play.
RUINS As the normal beavers ... you honestly don't care at all. Want some late game explosives? Have at it. Early game is all about food and trees. Mid game is all about surviving expansions for more wood and food. Making the dam taller. No scraps required at all.
Late game, sure. Get explosives and wonders and what not.
I wanted to write even more, but I'm tired. Good luck!
